As global internet freedom declined for the 14th consecutive year, Pakistan has joined the ranks of almost two dozen countries that have been declared ‘not free’ for doling out harsh punishments and imposing curbs on the internet. In its report Freedom on the Net 2024, Freedom House — a Washington DC-based organization that tracks democracy and threats to freedom worldwide — has assessed internet freedom in 72 countries. Pakistan scored 27 out of 100 (not free) along with 21 countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Iran. With a score of 50, India was declared ‘partly free’ along with 31 other countries. Nineteen countries were ranked ‘free’ by the report.
